From its small beginning, Fuquay Gun has grown over the years because of our intense focus on providing excellent quality and service to our customers.
Clay Ausley opened Fuquay jewelry and pawn October 2004 in a small retail shopping center in Fuquay-Varina. This store was intended to be a Pawn Shop with an unusually large amount of guns and accessories due to Clays love for firearms. By February 2005 the small shop was busy enough that Melissa Ausley (Clay’s Lovely wife) had to jump in to give him some assistance so that Clay could spend more time on the gun counter.
In the beginning there were many jokes about the amount of merchandise not in the store. One customer said (I have more guns than this is my back seat of my truck) and it may have been true, that first year was tough.
Thankfully Fuquay gun has some awesome customers and during the first 2 years brought enough referral and word of mouth business to keep the doors open.
The Breakfast table at the local Bojangles was an awesome advertising tool thanks to a group of retired locals that would start there day at Bojangles with coffee and a biscuit and the pawnshop was the usual 2nd stop for the day.
Fuquay Jewelry & Pawn started setting up at the Dixie Gun and Knife shows in Raleigh NC with only 1 table of guns and some ammo cans. Clay knew the business was growing and needed an infusion of cash to go to the next level so he sold off his loved bass boat other personal items to give the business that much needed extra cash flow. Now in the 3rd year inventory and customer levels went through the roof and it now seemed as if this idea of having good knowledgeable customer service and good prices was working out.
Fuquay Gun had several customers turn part time employees willing to work for guns that really helped out until we could hire Rob Edwards as our first full time salesman. In the 3rd year Fuquay jewelry and Pawn outgrew its retail space and the customers wanted more guns and accessories so the pawn idea was put on the back burner making room for more guns and accessories. We also picked up some awesome knowledgeable sales people to help on weekends and at gun shows (which were now between 8 and 10 tables and over 450 guns). These gun shows were an awesome way to get the word out about Fuquay jewelry and Pawns selection and service. The fourth year was a major year for growth now having the largest display of arms at the Dixie Gun show in Raleigh now displaying over 700 firearm s with the help of our Gun Show Team consisting of 12 truly dedicated hard working individuals. Fuquay Jewelry Pawn no longer pawns anything other than guns and gold so the name no longer fit especially when you walk through the door and there is nothing but guns and accessories so the name was changed to fit the business. Fuquay Gun & Gold would be the new name.
The business will still loan money on your guns and gold but that’s it and only sells shooting sports merchandise.
During the fourth year Fuquay Gun hired Tommy Smith to assist in the daily management of operations and customer service, he has proven to be a true asset to the company and its customers. On the fourth year it was decided that the company’s time and efforts would best be served in the retail location instead of at gun shows especially since most now knew of shop and its location.
The end of 2009 brought us a presidential election for the record books sending gun sales to unprecedented levels. These new highs in customer traffic required the assistance of many part time employees (extra special thanks to all).
The 5th year was an a very fast paced year of Obama gun sales, multiple news interviews about gun sales, ammo and firearms shortages and during all of this Fuquay Gun is in desperate need of more retail space. There were 2 retail buildings Clay had a serious interest in owning if either ever came up for sale and guess what happened during the Obama gun run, that’s right one of them hit the market. Again Clay sold off some assets to make the ultimate dream come true and 6 months later Fuquay Gun has its own building with a private parking lot to fit 25 and additional parking on the curb and neighboring lots of at least 30 more spaces. March 3, 2010 was the Grand Opening at the New location 330 South Main (hwy 401) Fuquay Varina You can’t miss the huge Glock on the sides of the building (over six foot long) . Now with the move to a new building Fuquay needed additional force and in comes Shawn Lane who has proven to be a valued player on the Fuquay Gun Team.
The new location has proven to be a good move with much more new customer traffic.
Clay and Missy purchased an awesome home place in the country and they built a private classroom and range. Very Nice Covered shooting positions with ceiling fans, lighting and restroom to make sure the students are comfortable. Then come the instructors! They now have on staff 2 Raleigh Police officers that do the majority of the training and classes, David Page and Robert Strickland. (Please see the classes section of the website).
Fuquay Gun decided to offer Class 3 items such as sound suppressors, short barrel Rifles and Shotguns and even the occasional full auto firearms. So as of June 2012 they are now a stocking dealer of many of these items.
They also have a new addition to the Fuquay Gun Team (Beau). Clay and Missy took a trip in celebration of 15 years of wedded bliss and when they got back they had a surprise waiting for them. It appears that at a year of age Beaus owners got tired of him getting bigger and thought the Ausley place looked like a good home to throw him out (this was witnessed by a neighbor). Needless to say Missy is taking good care of him (he eats better than Clay most of the time). So I guess he will be the company mascot at the Ausley Residence / Fuquay Gun Training Center. Beau is a Border Collie mix and very smart, and yes he gets along great with Hunter the store mascot.
The biggest complaint at Fuquay Gun is that they are not open on Sundays. Some of the customers actually travel hours to get to the store and it is very discouraging to find it closed. So effective 7-22-2012 they are now open on Sunday 11am – 5pm. This has already proven to be great so far especially with the 2012 Obama gun run 2 starting up.
The 2012 Presidential Election wow, referred to it as the Obama Gun Run II. This was a very busy time in the shop with multiple interviews with different media avenues including newspapers and local news crews, one even spent the day at the store filming live on location. FYI all of the media that do come to Fuquay Gun for stories are instructed to only talk to and film willing customers and this has worked out just fine. This OGR II was a very busy time because many folks thought that since Obama didn’t make any law Changes with his first election he will certainly change regulations the second time around. Very busy times continue and Fuquay Gun continues to grow.
The 2012 Presidential election was won by Obama and many feared that he would take actions against our second amendment rights this time around for sure because he had nothing to lose this time. So the Gun Run 2012 is officially under way.
At the end of Fuquay Guns 8 year in business there was a major tragedy.
Sandy Hook 12-14-2012, a very sad day for everyone. Adam Lanza took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults and injured 2 adults and 12 children before taking his own life. This rocked our country! Wow what a sad day for all. After this event there were many pushing for an assault on the second amendment and this was what started Gun Run 2013, now known as the highest gun sales year in history. Fuquay Gun experienced extreme demand on products and services and not near enough supply to go around.
This was what some called the perfect storm in the gun industry.
- Obama Gun Run II, folks buying much wanted firearms before the reelected president can change any laws making it more difficult to purchase or restrict what can be purchased.
- The 2 Obama Gun Runs have actually created more new shooters than anything ever seen and these shooters are buying guns and shooting in addition to all of the folks that have been shooting most of their lives.
- Christmas time is always the busiest time of the year in gun shops, guns make great gifts.
- Sandy Hook has now sparked more anxiety that there will be new legislation changing how we buy or what we can buy.
All of these happing basically at the same time created the worst ammo and gun shortages ever seen. This is a time when most gun shops raised all of their prices and claimed it to be the trickle down that caused all of the prices to up in some cases as much as 1000% yes that is one thousand percent. Very few manufactures or distributors actually raised prices and most of them that did raise prices it was only 5% or so. While other shops were raising prices Fuquay gun maintained their pricing only raised prices on the items that cost the store more to buy. This fair business practice had customers lined up at the doors most mornings, everyone wanting to get a piece of that mornings shipments of guns and ammunition. One morning there was 94 clients in line to get in when the store opened. Fuquay Gun did not raise prices and this was quickly noticed by most gun and ammo buyers within a 5 hour drive. All of this was because Fuquay Gun was selling many guns and ammo for half or even a third of what most shops were selling the same product. There were many dealers that attempted to buy at FG&G and take the items back to their shop and double the price and resell it, FG&G stopped as much of this as they found out about. There were other local dealers very upset that Fuquay Gun didn’t play the gouging game. Fuquay Gun Decided to stay the course that they had plotted from the beginning, give them good customer service and great prices and they will come and they did. Fuquay Gun increased its customer base drastically the first 6 months of 2013 by simply taking care of its customers instead of taking advantage of a very bad situation. Fuquay Gun was even able to acquire more product than most shops when some of the suppliers found out about their non-gouge pricing policy.
2012-2013 Fuquay Guns fair business practices brought them so many new customers that once again they have out grown their facilities. The biggest problems Fuquay Gun Had in 2013 was a low supply of products and a HUGE amount of folks, they were are drastically out of room. Clay and Missy went out in search for that ideal property to build the ultimate new Fuquay Gun location, the market was right and they quickly purchased a prime location on the North end of Fuquay Varina. Road traffic alone is 3 times the traffic at the current location. For those of you locals this was the old T’s Tackle location and before that it was Kicks the local watering hole back in late 60’s and early 70’s many of the local hot rods would meet there before drag racing up and down highways 42 and 401. Boy times have changed. So the new location is actually a fairly historic piece of land for most locals anyway.
2014 Fuquay Guns 10th year in business started off with construction on the new facility started and went extremely fast. Construction started March 15, 2014 and was finished on May 15,2014. Fuquay Gun even received a lot of free advertising from several different media avenues due to a couple of folks in town not being happy with the signage choices on the new building. I guess its true no advertising is bad advertising because this sign debate really brought the customers in to support the store and the Ausleys.
The New facility is 4 times larger than the previous facility and will allow the now 17 member team to stock many more items and expand existing lines as well. Fuquay Gun will now be out of the Down Town district so they will have much more room to have events and customer appreciation days. Be sure to stop in and see the new facility. The 10 year anniversary and Grand opening will be in October and will be announced on Facebook and fuquaygun.com please come out and joint them it will be a treat.
The great customers of Fuquay Gun are the reason for it’s success and it is greatly appreciated by the entire Fuquay Gun Team and its family’s Thank you and please let the Team at Fuquay Gun know what they can do for you and your shooting needs!
